Alexander Ivanitski

Colonel Alexander Ivanitski was head of the Mining Service in the Caucasus and a pioneering military photographer in the region. In 1857, he was sent on a business trip to Paris and London by Commander-in-Chief A. Bariatinski with the specific task of establishing a military photographic institution under the main headquarters of the Caucasian Army. After several years of organizational work, the institution began functioning in 1863, marking a significant milestone in the development of professional photography in the Caucasus.

Ivanitski was a full member of the French Society of Photography during the mid-19th century, reflecting his international recognition and expertise in the emerging field. His military position combined with his photographic skills made him instrumental in documenting the Caucasus region during a pivotal period of Russian Imperial expansion. The military photographic institution he established trained photographers and produced systematic documentation of the region, contributing significantly to the professionalization of photography in Georgia and the broader Caucasus.
