Alexander Engel

1848–1918

Alexander Engel (1848–1918) was a photographer and former landscape painter active in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Russian Empire during the late 19th century.

In 1879 he became a member of the Russian Imperial Geographic Society and received a silver medal from the St. Petersburg Geographic Society. In 1881 he was awarded a Diploma at the International Congress of Geographers.

In December 1890 Engel opened a photographic studio in Tiflis. In 1895 he established a photo-lithographic studio, expanding his practice into photographic reproduction and printing. From 1896 he worked as a photographer for the Transcaucasian Railway, documenting railway infrastructure and regional development.

He was also the author of the album “Railways of Caspian Land.”

Alexander Engel disappeared in Central Asia during the Civil War in 1918.
