This photograph shows the Rike district of Tbilisi along the banks of the Mtkvari River. Rike was one of the distinctive riverfront areas of Old Tbilisi, characterized by dense residential buildings and its proximity to major city crossings. Because of its location between the river and the surrounding hills, the district became an important part of the city's historical urban landscape.
