This photograph shows the monument to Count Mikhail Vorontsov in Tbilisi in 1890. Vorontsov served as the Viceroy of the Caucasus during the mid-nineteenth century and played a major role in the administrative and urban development of the region. The monument stood in a central public square of the city and became one of the recognizable landmarks of Imperial-era Tbilisi. The surrounding buildings and gathered residents illustrate the social life of the city at the end of the nineteenth century.
