Mikhail’s Bridge spanning the Mtkvari River in Tbilisi, photographed by Engel in 1885.
This photograph shows Mikhail’s Bridge crossing the Mtkvari River in Tbilisi in 1885. The multi-arch stone bridge was an important transportation link during the late nineteenth century, connecting different districts of the expanding city. Horse-drawn carts visible on the riverbank illustrate everyday transportation of the period, while the surrounding buildings and hillside settlements reveal the urban landscape of Tbilisi during the Imperial era.
