Vladimer Barkanov

1834–1892

Vladimir Barkanov (c. 1834–1892) was a pioneering Caucasian photographer active in the late 19th century. Originally based in Kutaisi, he gained early recognition as a member of the French Society of Photography. Barkanov’s work was exhibited at major international events, including the 1872 Moscow Polytechnic Exhibition and the 1873 Vienna World Exhibition, where he received a certificate of merit.

In 1873 he established a modern photographic studio in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), known for its high technical standards and hand-colored portrait work. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, Barkanov served as a military correspondent, documenting the Caucasus front.
