The Opera Theatre building in Tiflis. Photograph by Eduard Klar, 1896.

This photograph shows the Opera Theatre building in Tiflis (modern Tbilisi), one of the city’s most important cultural landmarks in the late nineteenth century. The building is characterized by its monumental entrance and richly ornamented façade.

The image was taken in 1896 by photographer Eduard Klar and captures the theatre within the urban streetscape of Tiflis, with pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles visible in the foreground.

The theatre played a central role in the cultural life of the city and became one of the major centers of musical and theatrical performance in the Caucasus.
