The Bagrationi Family — Aristocratic Studio Portrait (Late 19th Century)

Studio portrait of members of the Bagrationi aristocratic family seated with several children in a photographic studio setting.

Members of the Bagrationi noble family in a studio portrait with children, Georgia, late 19th century.

This photograph shows members of the Bagrationi family, one of the most historically significant dynasties of Georgia. The Bagrationi dynasty ruled the Georgian kingdoms for centuries, and even after the annexation of Georgia by the Russian Empire in the early nineteenth century, many branches of the family continued to live as members of the Georgian aristocracy.

The portrait likely dates from the late nineteenth century, a period when family studio photography became popular among noble and educated families in Georgia. The composition presents parents surrounded by their children, emphasizing family structure, lineage, and social identity.

Although the Bagrationi name is associated with the royal dynasty of Georgia, this photograph represents members of an aristocratic branch of the family rather than the ruling royal household. Such portraits document how descendants of the historic royal dynasty participated in the social and cultural life of Georgian noble society during the Imperial Russian period.
