Portrait of Petre Melikishvili, chemist and prominent Georgian scholar, who became the first rector of Tbilisi State University in 1918. The photograph, taken by P. Kozlov, shows Melikishvili seated at his desk surrounded by books and documents. Melikishvili was one of the key founders of modern higher education in Georgia and played an important role in the establishment of Tbilisi University during the period of the First Georgian Republic.
