This photograph depicts Ilia Chavchavadze, one of the most prominent Georgian writers, public figures, and national leaders of the nineteenth century. He is shown standing on a street in Tiflis (modern Tbilisi) in front of a building entrance.

According to the historical caption, the photograph was taken by Sergei Margulov, a member of the Tiflis Society of Amateur Photographers. The image is an example of early documentary-style urban portrait photography from late nineteenth-century Tiflis.
