Georgian Orthodox Priest with Family — Studio Portrait (Late 19th Century)

Studio portrait of a Georgian Orthodox priest seated with members of his family, surrounded by several children.

Georgian Orthodox priest with his family in a studio portrait, Georgia, late 19th century.

This photograph shows a Georgian Orthodox priest together with members of his family, photographed in a studio setting in the late nineteenth century. The priest is recognizable by his traditional clerical clothing and the large cross worn on his chest, symbolizing his role within the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Family portraits of clergy households were an important part of social life in Georgia during the nineteenth century. Like aristocratic families, clergy families documented their household structure through photography, presenting parents and children together in formal compositions.

Such images provide valuable insight into the everyday life of Orthodox clergy families in Georgia, illustrating the intersection of religious authority, family life, and social status in Georgian society during the Russian Imperial period.
