Golovin Prospect

The Commercial and Cultural Axis of Imperial Tiflis

XIX century

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Golovin Prospect emerged as the central boulevard of Imperial Tiflis — a space where commerce, architecture, and urban life converged. Elegant façades, cafés, theaters, government offices, and photographic studios lined the street, transforming it into the symbolic heart of a modernizing city.

This project presents historical photographs documenting Golovin Prospect as both physical space and social stage. Through panoramic views, architectural studies, and street scenes, we witness the transformation of Tiflis into a cosmopolitan imperial center. The boulevard was not merely a roadway — it was an arena of visibility, status, and aspiration.

By examining its buildings and urban rhythms, we better understand how Tiflis positioned itself within the wider imperial world while cultivating a distinct local identity.
