Families of the 19th Century
In the late nineteenth century, photography entered Georgian society and began preserving the lives of noble families. These portraits show members of historic aristocratic houses — Gedevanishvili, Eristavi, Bagrationi, and Tumanishvili — captured in studios and family settings.
The images reveal more than faces. They reflect the structure of Georgian aristocratic life: parents and children gathered together, generations presented as symbols of lineage and continuity.
Their clothing tells the story of a changing world, where traditional Georgian culture met European influence during the Imperial era.
Today these photographs remain powerful documents of Georgian social history — preserving the memory, dignity, and identity of the country’s noble families.
