Amateur Photographers

Date range
1893-1906

The Amateur Photographers collection features works by distinguished Georgian intellectuals, engineers, poets, and artists who practiced photography as a serious avocation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These cultured individuals—including engineers like Joseph Andronikashvili—were founding members of the Tbilisi Society of Amateur Photographers. They combined technical expertise with artistic sensibility to document Georgian society, architecture, landscapes, and cultural life. The society regularly organized exhibitions, establishing photography as both art form and documentary practice within Georgian intellectual circles. Their work provides invaluable visual documentation of Georgia during the Imperial period.
