David Guramishvili

Date range
1857-1926

David Guramishvili (1857–1926) was an amateur photographer active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose work provides valuable visual documentation of social, cultural, and urban life in Georgia during a period of profound transformation. Beginning his photographic practice in the 1870s, Guramishvili captured scenes of everyday life, civic institutions, architecture, and emerging modern society.

His photographs reflect the transition from imperial rule to early modern Georgian civic identity, preserving images of public gatherings, social groups, and built environments that no longer exist in their original form. Although not a professional photographer, Guramishvili’s sustained engagement with photography demonstrates technical awareness and documentary intent.

This collection presents his surviving works as historically significant visual records that contribute to the understanding of late 19th- and early 20th-century Georgian society, culture, and modernization.
